Now that you’ve learned some essential skills to reaching an agreement, it’s time to discuss the what, why, and how of that agreement. You’ll want to know what to do if you and your former spouse can come to an agreement. This chapter will help you create an agreement and take you through the steps of what to do with that agreement. It will also guide you through how to get a divorce. The goal is to get you prepared to sit down with your former spouse and work out a way to resolve your issues without going to court.

Before you get started, take a moment to assess whether you and your former spouse are ready to sit down and negotiate a separation agreement.

Ask yourself:

  • Are you and your former spouse ready to sit down and try to come to an agreement?
  • Are there any urgent matters that need to be settled?
  • Are there barriers in the way of reaching an agreement?
  • Could you use the help of a professional to get to an agreement?

If you’re not ready, review Chapter 3, Preparing Yourself or Chapter 4, Getting Help.
