7.1 Legal Skills – The Basics

Before you begin to build your legal case, you’re going to want to equip yourself with some legal skills and understanding. To start, the skills you need are legal research and organizing your evidence. Learning these skills provides a foundation on which you can begin to build your case.  Read the next sections carefully and be sure to do the activities. It may take time for you to master these skills and that’s ok. Give yourself time to digest all the new information.

In Chapter 6 – Court , you filled out the Key Issues Worksheet.  Refer back to this worksheet now. You will build your case based on the areas of conflict for those key issues.

This chapter will guide you through the steps for building your case. By the end of the chapter you will be able to fill in the Case Building Worksheet on your own. A blank version of the worksheet is shown below. Don’t worry about completing it now. But as you move through this chapter, think about the key issues and what you want. Later, you will look at the law, consider points you need to prove and what evidence you have for proof. As you read the next sections, it is helpful to think about each of these elements.
